    Game Notes:
  • Tonight’s Match-up …. Logan and Gallipolis meet for the 82nd time. The all time series is knotted up between the two schools at 40-40-1. All but four games were SEOAL games, the lone exceptions being 1920 and 1922 before the SEOAL was formed and 2008 and 2009 when the two teams met in non-league games because each school was in a different division of the SEOAL.
The Blue Devils, defending SEOAL Champions, are 5-3 (2-1) and all but eliminated from OHSAA playoffs. The Gallians were shocked at home last week in a 31-21 loss against Warren, their first loss to the Warriors in 15 years and first SEOAL loss since the finale of the 2011 season. The Blue Devils other two losses came against unbeaten Athens (62-19) and Belfry (KY) (41-19).
Logan fell back to .500 last week in a 58-13 thrashing against Zanesville, the Associated Press’s third ranked team in Division II. The Chieftains have an opportunity to clinch a share of the SEOAL championship with at least one win in their last two games. The Chieftains have not won an SEOAL title since 2009.
  • Last Year’s Match-Up …. These two teams met with SEOAL title implications a year ago at Logan Chieftain Stadium, with the Blue Devils topping the Chieftains 23-14. Gallipolis played a smothering defensive game that shut down Logan scoring threats while QB Wade Jarrell of GAHS made enough plays to clinch a share of the SEOAL title for the Blue Devils.
  • Déjà vu all over again …. Tonight marks the 6th time since the turn of the century that Gallipolis and Logan have met in the final two weeks of the regular season with SEOAL title implications. Gallipolis in 3-2 in the previous five match-ups:
     2002 – Week 10 – Gallipolis 7, Logan 3 – GAHS Clinched a share of the title with Marietta
     2003 – Week 10 – Gallipolis 41, Logan 23 – GAHS clinched the outright title
 2004 – Week 9 – Logan 43, Gallipolis 13 – Logan grabbed the league lead and shared the title with GAHS by defeating Warren the next week
 2005 – Week 9 – Logan 35, Gallipolis 29 – Logan clinched a share of the title by defeating GAHS and won it outright the next week
 2012 – Week 9 – Gallipolis 23, Logan 14 – The Blue Devils clinched a share of the title and beat Jackson in week 10 to win it outright
  • Chieftain QB on opposite sideline …. Alex Penrod, quarterback of the undefeated 2001 Chieftains, will face off against his alma matter tonight. Penrod is the defensive coordinator for the Blue Devils.
  • Home Sweet Home? …. Despite being one of the more unique settings and best home field advantages in the SEOAL, Memorial Field hasn’t been a house of horrors for the Chieftains. In fact, Logan hasn’t lost in the French City since 2002 and has won on six of their last seven visits.

  • Playoff picture bleak …. No one in the SEOAL has been “mathematically eliminate” from the playoff according to JoeEitel.com, however, it appears the SEOAL will not have a qualifier for the OHSAA playoffs in 2013. Warren is in the best position in DIV, Region 13 sitting 12th.
The last time the SEOAL failed to place at least one team in the playoffs was 1998 when Logan and Jackson shared the SEOAL title. That was the last season in which only 4 teams qualified for the playoffs. Logan was 7th in Division I, Region 3 while Jackson was 5th in Division III, Region 11. Both Jackson and Logan would have qualified in the same regions if the playoffs included the top 8 teams instead of the top 4.
    SEOAL Playoff Qualifiers by year:

    2011 - Jackson

1991 was the last time that not a single SEOAL finished in the top 8 of their region.
  • All-Time wins milestone within sight …. Logan is nearing an all-time wins milestone according to the latest research compiled by LoganFootball.com. Logan won their 546th game since football was recognized as a Varsity sport at Logan High School in 1912, meaning that the Chieftains could reach 550 all-time wins as soon as next season.
  • Meet the new boss …. Logan’s Billy Burke was named the school’s 30th head football coach during the off-season. Burke is a graduate of Lancaster High School and played football at the University of Akron. Burke previously coached as an assistant at Hilliard Darby and was the head coach at Buckeye High School in Medina County.
  • SEOAL …. The Chieftains are founding members of the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League, and have been members continuously since 1925. Logan, winners of more titles (25) than any school in the history of the league, will compete with Gallia Academy, Jackson, Portsmouth, and Warren for the championship. Jackson is second to Logan with 22 SEOAL championships.
A panel of SEOAL Media representatives selected Gallipolis as the favorite to repeat as Champions after the Blue Devils 5-0 league record in 2011. Logan was picked to finish third behind the Jackson Ironmen and just ahead of Warren and Portsmouth.
