Gallipolis stops Pt. Pleasant 56-47
For the first time in more than four years, Gallipolis Gallia Academy was able to defeat the visiting Pt. Pleasant Big Blacks Tuesday night in a non-league hardwood contest on the GAHS boards in Centenary.
During Wade Martin’s four year career at PPHS, the Blue Devils were unable to beat the Big Blacks. On Dec. 9, PPHS downed GAHS 82-73 for its 6th straight win over the Ohioans.
Prior to Tuesday, last Blue Devil hardwood win over the Big Blacks was on Feb. 16, 2006 44-42 in the old GAHS gym on Fourth and State. The two teams did not play from 2006-07 until 2011-12.
Pt. Pleasant won six straight games from 2011-12 to 2014-15–62-39, 68-58, 61-48 ,64-39, 80-51 and 82-73
Tuesday, Gallipolis led all the way in its triumph. The win snapped Gallipolis’ four game losing streak dating back to the win at Rock Hill.
Gallipolis, behind the hot hands of Alex White and Wes Jarrell, zoomed to a 11-0 lead during the first four minutes of play and never looked back.
Gallipolis led 17-10 after one period, 36-26 at halftime and 43-30 going into the last quarter. PPHS closed the gap to 47-41 with 3:00 left and 50-44 at the 1:32 mark on a goal by Doug Workman, but the home team sank six free throws in the final seconds to secure the hard-earned win.
Gallipolis was led by Wes Jarrell’s 19 points. Alex White added 15, and Devin Henry 10. Adam Yates paced PPHS with 15 points. Brian Gibbs added eight.
Pt. Pleasant sank 15 of 52 field goal attempts for 28.8 percent. At the line, PPHS made 11 of 14 freebies for 78.5 percent. Pt. Pleasant picked off 21 rebounds, 10 by Yates and had 16 personal fouls and 11 turnovers.
Gallipolis made 21 of 44 field goal attempts for 47.7 percent. At the line, GAHS was 12 of 18 for 66.6 percent. GAHS picked off 29 rebounds, including eight by Jarrell. Gallipolis had 19 turnovers and 16 personal fouls.
Gallipolis improved to 3-12 overall. Pt. Pleasant dropped to 3-8 on the year. GAHS will play a non-league game at Bidwell River Valley Friday and host Portsmouth in a Southeastern Ohio League game on Saturday in the Centenary gym. Pt. Pleasant will play at Hurricane on Saturday.
There was no freshman game. Pt. Pleasant rallied late to win the reserve game, 43-38.
The Redskins led 19-10 after one, 22-20 at halftime and 33-32 going into the final period.
The visitors outscored the Blue Imps 10-6 in the final period. The score was tied 36-36 with 2:32 remaining when PPHS scored six quick points off turnovers to win the game.
Gallipolis dropped to 4-11 overall. Pt. Pleasant improved to 2-6—the Redskins only other win was over the Blue Imps earlier in the season.
For Gallipolis, Brandon Simms led the way with 12 points. For PPHS, Porter Rairden was high with 21 points
