The Associated Press released its first football poll of the 2013 season and area teams are well represented.
Kirtland (3-0) is the highest ranked local team as the Hornets are No. 1 in Division VI and received 15 first place points. Willoughby South (3-0) is No. 4 in Division II and received four first place votes. Aurora (3-0) received one first place vote and came in ranked No. 5 in Division III. Villa Angela-St. Joseph (3-0) is No. 10 in Division VI.
Several other area squads earned votes but failed to make the top 10. That group includes Mentor (13th in Division I), Brush (15th in Division II), Madison (19th in Division II), Chagrin Falls (12th in Division IV), Orange (19th in Division IV), Perry (22nd in Division IV), Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (24th in Division IV) and Cuyahoga Heights (26th in Division VI).
Chagrin Falls earned two first place votes in Division IV.

There should be no such thing as a high school AP poll. It counts for nothing. Massillon has 22 AP mythical state championships, and 0 earned playoff championships. If that tells you nothing else, it says the AP poll is nothing more than a popularity contest.

I enjoy how some people crow about a poll. Takes a lot of time to make a poll like this. Just because southeastern Ohio isn’t represented as well as you’d like it to be doesnt mean it is wrong.

How much time does it take to vote for your local team? What is there to a poll that takes so much time? What does OSU have to do with a high school football poll? I don’t care what part of the state is represented or not represented, it is still a popularity contest and nothing more.

How many AP pollsters live in southeastern Ohio? I don’t know how you can expect pollsters in Toledo to know much about schools like Gallia Academy. Everyone comes in with an expectation of how teams will do, and if the teams are meeting the expectations, then they’ll keep the pre-determined ranking.
