They have one of my homies on there now, Captian Wade Henley! He’s driving the smallest boat in the fleet. Great guy, tough bastige too. I havent seen him for a few years, glad to see one of the cool guys get his own boat and a spot on the show.
yeah, i saw it. those guys that survived that sunken ship have to be shellshocked. you’re right, that guy has the s.s. minnow compared to those other boats. thats a boat that i dont know if i would want to be on in the bering sea. the show always refers to the fleet. is the fleet just a generic term? i thought these guys owned the boats themselves. the show also makes it sound like these are the only boats doing it. how many boats are there actually crabbing in the same area at once?

there’s lots of boats out there, they just feature these few.
The "fleet" is just the term for all the boats fishing that fishery. There are more boats fishing that you don’t see. Not a lot more, like the glory days of the derby fishing.

I would fish with Wade over most of the other skippers, he’s been fishing all his life. It’s not the size of the boat it’s how you drive it. A deck with 50 pots is easier to clear than one with 150. He’s going to turn gear faster than the big boats. Less expensive to operate too…which means crew share is a bigger percentage.

My boys watch this show faithfully and they told me to tell you that you guys are underpaid! They also said if you ever make it to SE Ohio, they got to meet you- something about more guts and backbone than most.

Sometimes it’s a month of misery for what you would make at McDonalds…other times it’s close to 2 grand a day. It pays to catch crab not just be on a boat ride. If you get fired or quit…well hope you have enough cash in your pocket to buy a plane ticket. I’ve seen guys quit before we dump the first pot. Seen guys keep working with broken ankles and crushed fingers.(duct tape that crap and get back out there!) It’s not that hard of work, it’s mental toughness that carries you through when you have been hauling gear for 30+ hours on 4 hours sleep.

Phil is right. Nobody in their right mind would have jelly fish fights, or see who can eat the biggest handfull of bait. the ol seagull mousetrap is my personal fave or the ol 2 guys cover their buddy with a giant octopus game…damn things stick to rain gear like glue…creepy when you feel that beak moving in the middle of your back.
